When the words "Classic" and "Salmon Fly" are put in the same sentence, it isn't long before the Garry Dog receives a mention. Famed for its ability to produce Salmon in the coldest, harshest conditions of Spring, it is also quite a good pattern for the smaller spate streams during the summertime Grilse runs. Scotland has been the birthplace of many, many great patterns over the past 200 years or so. The Green Highlander, which began life as a fully dressed classic Atlantic Salmon Fly is now probably one of the best known Salmon flies in the world. Its appeal stretches as far as Russia and Scandinavia to the west coast of the U.S.A., and all points in between. Munro's KillerMunro's Killer Ref: DF-HWGD-0004
Created by JAJ Munro, in Aberlour, on the banks of the River Spey in Scotland, this is another pattern that has withstood the ravages of time based purely on its versatility throughout the Salmon fishing season. It is very effective in large sizes during high clear or coloured water in the spring and is surprisingly effective in smaller sizes during the Grilse run. The debate seems to rage on forever in relation to which came first - the Munro or the Willie Gunn, nonetheless, it is found in many fly boxes throughout the Salmon fishing world for very good reason.

Space restrictions dictate the little that we can say about this pattern compared to what could be said about it ! It is a Salmon fly of the highest order and a Sea Trout Fly which has very few peers. With its classical hairwing silhouette, J.C. cheeks and bright holographic Silver body, this fly fishes in an extraordinarily wide array of water conditions and colours. Smaller sizes are excellent for Sea Trout and Grilse in summer low water conditions whereas the larger sizes are excellent in the late Spring and early Autumn times.

Pearly StoatPearly Stoat Ref: DF-HWGD-0010
This is a variant of the ever popular Stoats Tail which, over a period of years, has gained a place of respect with fishermen. It is along known fact that Black and Green are a very effective combination of colours for many species of Salmonoids, and this pattern is no different. The body consists of Pearl Mylar, overlaid on a black thread body, which produces a bright metallic green colour which is very effective for either Sea Trout or Salmon. It is very good in small sizes for both species, particularly in the evening time or as water clears after a spate.

Fly tyers tend to dress heavily with brighter colours for Spring time fishing, with the colours gradually being mixed darker towards the latter end of the season.
